How to create a Solana token, step by step
A step-by-step walkthrough for launching a standard SPL token with a name, symbol and logo — with or without code — and the decisions that matter before you click create.

What you are actually creating
A Solana token is a mint account owned by the SPL Token program. The mint stores the supply, the number of decimals, and two optional authorities: the mint authority (can create more tokens) and the freeze authority (can freeze any holder's token account). Your balance lives in a separate token account (an associated token account derived from your wallet and the mint). The name, symbol and logo are not part of the classic mint — they live in a Metaplex metadata account that points to a JSON file with the image URL.
Before you start
- A Solana wallet such as Phantom, Solflare or Backpack with enough SOL for the fees (see the cost breakdown).
- A square logo (PNG or JPG; 512×512 or larger looks sharp in wallets).
- Final name and symbol. Symbols are usually 3–6 uppercase letters.
- A decision on supply and decimals. 6 decimals is the common choice for fungible tokens; 9 matches SOL. Decimals cannot be changed later.
Option A — no code (about 2 minutes)
- Open a token creator and connect your wallet. On SolKit, you can first switch to Devnet and do a full test run with free test SOL.
- Enter name, symbol, supply, decimals and description, and upload the logo. The tool hosts the metadata JSON and image for you.
- Choose authorities. Keep "revoke mint" and "revoke freeze" on unless you have a concrete reason not to — see why it matters. Make metadata immutable only when the branding is final.
- Review the fee breakdown and sign one transaction. Your wallet shows every instruction. On SolKit the mint, metadata, your token account, the full supply, the revokes and the service fee are all in that single transaction, so it either fully succeeds or nothing happens.
- Check the result on Solscan: supply, decimals, "Mint authority: none", "Freeze authority: none", and the logo.
Option B — command line
With the Solana CLI and spl-token installed and a funded keypair:
spl-token create-token --decimals 6 spl-token create-account <MINT> spl-token mint <MINT> 1000000000 spl-token authorize <MINT> mint --disable spl-token authorize <MINT> freeze --disable
This creates a token without a name or logo. To add them you either create Metaplex metadata (for example with the Metaplex Umi SDK), or create a Token-2022 mint with the metadata extension (--program-id TokenzQdBNbLqP5VEhdkAS6EPFLC1PHnBqCXEpPxuEb --enable-metadata, then spl-token initialize-metadata). Either way you must host the JSON and image yourself. See Token-2022 vs SPL.
After creation
- Nobody can buy it yet. A token has no price until you create a liquidity pool (for example on Raydium or Meteora), which needs your token plus SOL and has its own DEX costs.
- Distribute it to a team or community with a multisender — see how to airdrop to holders.
- Do not impersonate existing projects or promise returns. Creating a token is easy; it only has value if real people want it.
