Token-2022 vs SPL Token: which should you use?

Solana has two token programs. Here is what Token-2022 (Token Extensions) adds, what it costs you in compatibility, and which one to choose for a new token.

Updated October 29, 2026

The two programs

  • SPL Token (TokenkegQfeZyiNwAJbNbGKPFXCWuBvf9Ss623VQ5DA) — the original program. Name and logo come from a separate Metaplex metadata account. Supported by essentially every wallet, explorer, DEX and tool.
  • Token-2022 / Token Extensions (TokenzQdBNbLqP5VEhdkAS6EPFLC1PHnBqCXEpPxuEb) — a superset of SPL Token with optional extensions chosen when the mint is created.

Notable Token-2022 extensions

Metadata + metadata pointerName, symbol and URI stored on the mint itself; no Metaplex account needed.
Transfer feeA percentage of every transfer is withheld for the fee authority to collect.
Transfer hookCalls a custom program on every transfer.
Non-transferableSoulbound tokens that cannot be moved.
Interest-bearing / scaled UI amountChanges how the balance is displayed, without changing the raw amount.
Permanent delegateAn authority that can move or burn tokens from any account.
Default account state, confidential transfers, pausable and othersFor permissioned or privacy-focused assets.

Trade-offs

  • Compatibility: wallets and major DEXs support Token-2022, but support for specific extensions (especially transfer hooks and transfer fees) varies by venue. Check the pool type you plan to use before you launch.
  • Trust: extensions like permanent delegate, transfer hooks or high transfer fees give the creator power over holders. Scanners flag them, much like an active freeze authority.
  • Irreversibility: most extensions must be chosen at creation and cannot be added later.

Which should you choose?

For a standard community or utility token that should trade everywhere, the classic SPL Token with Metaplex metadata is the safe default — and it is what SolKit's creator makes. Choose Token-2022 when you need a specific extension, such as a built-in transfer fee or non-transferable tokens, and you have checked that your target DEX supports it.

SolKit's multisender and holder snapshot work with both programs.
