How to revoke mint and freeze authority on Solana

What the mint, freeze and update authorities on a Solana token can do, why buyers and token scanners look at them, and how to revoke each one permanently.

The three authorities

AuthorityStored onWhat the holder of it can do
Mint authorityMint accountCreate new tokens at any time, increasing supply.
Freeze authorityMint accountFreeze any holder's token account so it cannot send or receive.
Update authorityMetaplex metadataChange the name, symbol, image and metadata URI.

Why revoke them

Mint authority: while it exists, the supply is a promise, not a fact. Whoever controls it could mint a large amount and sell into the market. Token scanners such as RugCheck and most trading interfaces show whether it is active, and many buyers skip tokens where it is.

Freeze authority: an active freeze authority lets the creator stop specific wallets from selling — a pattern used in honeypot scams. Many DEX interfaces and scanners warn about it or refuse such tokens for pools.

Update authority: keeping it lets you fix a typo or swap the logo; revoking it (making metadata immutable) guarantees the branding can never be changed to impersonate something else. It matters less than the first two, so it is reasonable to keep it until your branding is final.

When not to revoke

  • Planned emissions (staking rewards, vesting minted over time) need a mint authority — ideally held by a program or a multisig, not a personal wallet.
  • Regulated or permissioned assets may legally require freezing. Most community tokens are not in this category.

Revoking is permanent. There is no way to restore an authority set to none.

How to revoke

At creation: the simplest path — SolKit includes both revokes in the same transaction that creates the token, at no extra cost.

Later, with the CLI (signed by the current authority):

spl-token authorize <MINT> mint --disable
spl-token authorize <MINT> freeze --disable

Metadata: set isMutable to false with a Metaplex update instruction, signed by the update authority.

How to verify any token

Open the mint address on Solscan or Solana Explorer. "Mint Authority" and "Freeze Authority" should show as empty / none. Check this on tokens you buy, too.
